"I Wished the World for You"

I painted "I Wished the World for You" because I just kept repeating the words “I’m so sorry dear heart, you deserved so much more” while sobbing at the horrifying deaths of so many children. And I remembered the words of an elderly Ukrainian woman who gave sunflower seeds to a Russian soldier, told him to put the seeds in his pocket, and that she couldn’t wait to see the flowers blooming from his corpse. The adult in this painting looks at the baby, wrapped in a kuffiyeh, amidst the chaos she knows, looking through the sunflower and finding her child. My hope is that generations of Palestinians come soon who couldn’t fathom this type of brutality. That the children who will be born won’t have first hand experience of this horror.
